Ernakulam will be declared the first smoke-free tourism destination in the country on Saturday.
The achievement reflects the success of the continued efforts of the district administration, the health department, the Corporation, and the district panchayat to control smoking in public places, District Collector P.I. Sheikh Pareed told a press conference here on Friday.
He hoped that the declaration would go a long way in achieving the feat of making public places completely free of smoking and to enlist people's participation towards that goal.
Excise Minister K. Babu will inaugurate the function to mark the declaration at Marine Drive on Saturday at 2.30 p.m.
Hibi Eden, MLA, will preside.
Mayor Tony Chammany will preside over the passing out parade of the Tobacco Free School Force.
District panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappillil will release “smoke free Ernakulam” balloons. Resident's associations, Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association, Vyapari Vyavasayi Association, Hotel and Bar Association, and other civil society groups will declare their solidarity to the endeavour in ensuring and maintaining smoke-free status of public places.

Mr. Pareed will declare the district as smoke-free. Deputy Mayor B. Bhadra will honour exemplary performers in Smoke Free Ernakulam Mission. S. Latha, deputy director, Panchayat, will present the project progress.
R. Sudhakaran, District Medical Officer, will welcome the gathering and Rangadasa Prabhu, president, Smoke Free Ernakulam Coalition, will propose a vote of thanks.
