Kozhikode district administration & DTPC will conduct boat race in Chaliyar river.

KOZHIKODE: The city dwellers here will get an opportunity to watch miniature version of Nehru Trophy Boat race that has been luring both the domestic and international tourists to the state during Onam season.


The Kozhikode district administration, with the help of District Tourism Promotion Council, will organise Kunhali Marakkar boat race for the Malabar gold Trophy on Chaliyar river at Beypore on September 7 at 3 pm.


A team headed by district Collector who visited the Chaliyar River has identified 2km waterway on Chaliyar river laying between the Beypore harbor to Feroke old bridge is feasible to conduct boat race.


Speaking to TOI District Collector Dr P B Salim said ``the idea is to give a facelift to the tourism potential of the Malabar region especially of Kozhikode


. `We want to give a rare treat to the people of Kozhikode in this Onam season.It is just the beginning and we are planning to develop it as an annual boat race exclusively for the Malabar region, said the Collector. We hope it would help the district in converting it as a major tourism destination in the coming days, said the collector.


The distinct administration is planning to bring snake boats from Alappuzha to make it a gala event. The programme will be conducted with the help of sponsors.


The district administration has already held talk with several business firms such as Malabar Gold, MIMS Hospital, Kadavu resort and Malabar cements to sponsor the event.


Competition will be held in snake boat and country boat categories.


On the boat race day, artists will present Theyyam, Kolkkali, Onappattu, duffmuttu and other art forms of the region.A reception committee, comprising Elamaram Karim, MLA as chief patron and C Mayin Haji as chairman, was formed at a meeting held at the Beypore port hall, the other day.


Revenue Divisional Officer K K .Rajan is the general convener and District Sports Council president K J Math ai is the convener of the committee.
