KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode based Institute of Palliative Medicine that has been spearheading the palliative care movement in the state will help developing countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Ethiopia and Seashell island to adopt Kerala model of cost-effective community-based palliative care system, Neighbourhood Network in Palliative Care (NNPC) .
Kerala is the only government in Asia that announced a policy in palliative care. IPM-the only World Health Organisation collaborating centre in the developing countries has already held first round of discussion with the Sri Lankan government to include palliative care in its health control programme. Sri Lankan medical association in partnership with IPM and research centre will impart training to medical fraternity in the country to develop a community based palliative care facility.
Similarly, in Thailand IPM will work in collaboration with Khon Khen university and the National Research university.
Dr Suresh Kumar, director of IPM told TOI: "we don the role of facilitators to set up Kerala model palliative care in developing countries. We have already held talks with both Srilankan and Thailand governments. A need based action plan will be chalked out to health experts in both the countries.
A series of programmes, including conferences and workshops for palliative care units in the three countries, will be conducted to develop advocacy and awareness.
IPM has succeeded in adapting a palliative care policy in Bangladesh with the help of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka. The capacity building measures in that country started last year after inking a Memorandum of Understanding with the University.
